The Reed Lakes trail in Hatcher Pass is one of those rare Southcentral Alaska trails that starts out by going downhill. After the short, gradual descent to the valley floor, it then leads gradually uphill for another mile or so. Then the switchbacks begin up to the boulder field, which is fairly easy for people but can be tricky for dogs. My lab made it across with a little encouragement and a helping hand. Many other dogs accompanied their humans on the trail that day, too. Beyond the boulder field, cross to the right side of the creek; you'll see a trail on the left side, too, but you'll encounter a lot more boulders. Cross back to the left side at the "top" of the creek on large rocks. The trail climbs again to Lower Reed Lake, a turquoise gem with steep rock slides on one side and lush green, rocky humps on the other. Continue up a short, steep climb to the waterfall, then meander through rocks and tundra on the last gradual uphill to Upper Reed Lake.
Note: Archangel Road is now open again, with a new bridge across the creek just before the parking lot.
Distance one way: 4.5 miles
