Note to self: hiking through a few inches of new snow on top of an extremely icy trail takes longer than the same distance on a dry summer trail! Most people in our large group wore Kahtoolas, a brand of ice grippers that are well worth the money. Others wore lesser brands with wimpy spikes or mere coils and had a hard time staying upright. Still, we all had fun in the newly fallen snow--our first to speak of this winter. We started at the Eagle River Nature Center, hiked three miles to Echo Bend, then returned via the Dew Mound trail, which veers off of the riverside trail just upriver from Echo Bend. The trails here are well marked with posts and maps.
