The Root Glacier trail from the historic copper mill town of Kennicott in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is an easy, mostly flat road and trail that parallels Kennicott Glacier and continues past the toe of Root Glacier along the side of the mountain for another couple of miles. Most people turn left at the junction with a narrower trail that leads down to Root Glacier itself. Day-trippers and overnighters don crampons and hike across the glacier or stop at its edge and revel in being so close to such a massive, moving, chunk of ice.
