Rafting trips are available through the Alaska Railroad, and other companies offer glacier treks and rafting. Spencer Lake is popular with packrafters; you can get as up close to ice bergs as you dare. All day and night we heard chunks calving from the toe of the glacier. This is also a good place for biking.
The entire valley floor is brushy with a mix of cottonwood, willow, and alder. It's prone to flooding during rainy periods. Besides the main trail to the glacier, hikers have two additional trails to explore: the Bench Trail (sign was missing from the post when we were there) that heads up the mountain at about mile 2 and zigzags to a Forest Service cabin under construction. The other trail leads off the main trail just past the trail head and crosses the Spencer River on a huge, beautiful bridge. It extends approximately a mile now; plans are for it to connect Spencer with Grandview farther up the tracks.
Distance one way (Spencer Glacier Trail): 3.1 miles
